Church History

Our mission statement "Growing Faith Rooted in Mercy and Grace" reflects the rich rural heritage of the church.
We believe that growing our community requires growing faith in God. We are a small congregation that believes in the truth of the Bible and proclaims Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We meet in a historic church building with a traditional worship service, singing hymns, reading scripture, and preaching the inspired word. We pray together, praise together, and learn together. Many of our current members attended the church as children and feel deeply connected to the community as well as the church. The tradition of the church has always been to welcome anyone and everyone that comes to worship the one true God. It is hard to find someone who doesn't have a connection to Tanglewood!
Family names of the early members include Raney, Laswell, Wade, Wayland, Alexander, Jackson, and Shook. Many generations of these families are still part of Holton, Osgood, Versailles, and Correct communities. Descendants lovingly care for ancestors and friends who have found a final resting place in the surrounding cemetery. The original church began in 1862 with six people meeting in the one-room Raney schoolhouse once a month. Within a few years they moved into the log church that Mr. R. F. Prosser and his wife had built in 1859. The church took on the name "Tanglewood" because of the tangled mass of undergrowth and trees that were all over the Prosser farm at the time. The log church caught fire when sparks from a nearby sawmill ignited the structure. A brick church was built in 1871 on land donated by J. B. Dickerson in the current grove. Church activities were the hub of social life for many years. As children grew and left the community, fond memories of the church and the lessons they learned went with them. Families continue to look to the church to instill Christian values and morals in the upbringing of their children.
Despite our great love for our ancestors and Tanglewood, we recognize they weren't and aren't perfect. We've always relied on the mercy and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive our mistakes and our sins. This is why we're "Growing Faith, Rooted in Mercy and Grace." Please join us at 1739 County Rd. 175W, Versailles, Indiana at 10AM for worship on Sunday!
